An defense minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in all cars.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made cars.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Defence Context
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This wider security environment underscores the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
